Why do birds migrate?

Birds migrate in search of abundant food, find safe nesting grounds and find warmer places to escape extreme winters.

How do birds migrate?

Birds use the sun and the stars to find the right direction, using the rivers, coastlines and mountains as landmarks. Some studies show that certain species use the Earth's magnetic field like a compass.

Which bird undertakes the longest migration?

Arctic terns undertake the longest migration. Every year in July, Arctic terns take off from their nesting spots in the Arctic and fly over Africa and the Indian ocean to finally reach Antarctica in November. The round trip distance can be up to approximately 95,000 km, equal to two trips around the world.
