Why are ghost crabs called 'ghost' crabs?
Ghost crabs are named so because they are swift-footed, have pale colours matching the sand and are active nocturnaly.
What is the lifecycle of ghost crabs?
After mating, which usually happens near the males burrow, the females carry the developing eggs on their underside, attached to their abdomen. Eggs hatch into the water and grow into larvae amid plankton.Larvae undergo 5 moult stages before reaching the megalopa (post-larval) stage. The megalopa stage goes on for atleast 35 days, after which they reach the first crab stage. Ghost crabs take approximately one year to reach sexual maturity.

Ghost crabs are found on tropical and subtropical beaches of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans.
