When was the Jerdon's courser rediscovered?
The Jerdon's courser was rediscovered in 1986 after it was thought to be extinct in the early 1900s. Its last confirmed record was in 2009 before disappearance and in 2025 it was found again as its calls were recorded.
What is the habitat of the Jerdon's courser?
Jerdon's courser is currently known to be found only in Sri Lankamalleswara Wildlife Sanctuary and its surrounding districts in Andhra Pradesh. It orefers open rocky, undulating thorny-scrub jungle of the Eastern Ghats. It needs bare, non-grassy patches with sparse vegetation. It avoids dense forest patches and cultivated areas. It is known to prefer patches with Carissa bushes.
Why is the Jerdon's courser so rare?
Though large and vastly spread suitable habitats still exist today, even outside the protected area network in Andhra Pradesh, large tracts where the Jerdon's courser was recorded have been converted to agricultural land. The 2025 finding was the first record of the bird in 125 years outside the Lankamalla Hills.
