Barren Island lies 70 km to the east of the Andaman Islands and 130 km away from the capital city of Port Blair. It is home to the only active volcano on the north-south volcanic arc between Sumatra and Myanmar. It has a starkly barren west front due to the route its lava flow takes, meanwhile the south harbours a forest and cold springs.
