What are checkered keelback?
Checkered keelback (Fowlea piscator) are the most widley distributed freshwater snakes in India. They are also known as Asiatic water snake. They are called checkered keelback because of the keeled scales and checkered pattern all over the body, though their patterns vary in different geographical locations.
Are checkered keelback venomous?
Yes checkered keelback are venomous but they are harmless to humans. They may inflate their neck to show aggression.
Where are checkered keelback found?
Checkered keelback are found all over Asia in freshwater lakes, ponds, streams, rivers, irrigation canals, wells, agricultural fields and marshes. They are commonly seen close to urban areas, even with only a little green space.
