What is synchronised flashing in fireflies?

The males of some species of fireflies flash their lights in perfect harmony by watching and mimicking each other - this is known as synchronised flashing.

Do all fireflies glow?

No, not all fireflies glow. For the species that do glow, this bioluminiscent feature helps them in finding a mate and acts as a self defence feature.

How do male fireflies find a mate?

Since most female fireflies cannot fly, the males of the species fly over the ground where they are resting flashing their light signals. Females prefer males who have bright, well-timed and longer flashes. Firefly adults mate when there is a break in summer showers.
