Where are greater flamingos found?
Greater flamingos are found in inland salt lakes, brackish water lagoons, salt pans, high-altitude waterbodies. In India they are found in the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and all over south and central India.
Why are greater flamingos pink in colour?
While the chicks of greater flamingos are grey in colour the adults are pinkish-white in colour. The pink in their feathers comes from the carotenoid pigments in their diet of crustaceans (like shrimp). Their feathers turn white if they don't get a crustacean-rich diet.
Do greater flamingos raise chicks in a creche?
Yes. The male and female of greater flamingos incubate eggs together. Later, they raise chicks in a communal creche.
How do greater flamingos feed?
Greater flamingos are bottom feeders, unlike lesser flamingos who are surface feeders. They use their feet to loosen surface of the soil to extract prey. They rely on low water levels and constantly keep moving between different waterbodies.
