How many species of mammals are there?

There are over 5,400 species of mammals. They are found on all continents and oceans - from polar ice caps to deserts, rainforests and caves to aquatic habitats.

What are some main characterisitcs of mammals?

All mammals have mamamry glands, hair, hinged jaws and three tiny middle-ear bones. They can maintain a constant body temperature, independent of the environment.

Do all mammals give birth to live young?

Most mammals do give birth to live young other than platypuses and echidnas, who lay eggs.

What are the three main types of mammals?

The three types of mammals are placental mammals (young develop inside the body of the mother, attached to a placenta), marsupials (tiny, undeveloped young are born inside the mother's pouch, where they grow) and monotremes (primitive egg-laying mammals like platypus and echidnas).
