Everything you need to know about this tree-dwelling mammal
Nilgiri marten, a rare, tree-dwelling mammal that has short legs, partially retractable claws and a long slender body are about 55-65 cm in length. They are deep brown from head to rump with a bright patch on their throat ranging from yellow to orange and reddish fore limbs. They are endemic to the Western Ghats, south of Sakleshpur and are found in the states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Shola grasslands, montane rainforests and commercial plantations make up their habitat. Known for being diurnal and arboreal, they hunt in pairs. Their diet consists of birds, reptiles, small mammals and insects as they are agile hunters, however due to their tree-bound life they also occassionally eat fruits and seeds. They are Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List with less than a 1000 individuals in the wild..
