What is the Bugun liocichla?

The Bugun liocichla is a small bird, about 22 cm long, that is found in Arunachal Pradesh. It was discovered recently, in 2006, and first described as a new species by Dr Ramana Athreya.

Where is the Bugun liocichla found?

This critically endangered bird is only found in a small part of Arunachal Pradesh. Its range is limited to an area of 44 square kilometres. The bird is named after the Bugun tribe, in whose community forests it is found.

What is the population of the Bugun liocichla?

There are only about 50-249 Bugun liocichla remaining. Since 2012, their habitat of dense scrub and bamboo understorey, at an elevation of 2,000 metres, is being protected as part of the Singchung Bugun Village Community Reserve
