In India, the purple cochoa occurs in Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, and south Assam hills. They are also found in Nepal, Myanmar, China, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. The purple cochoa is a summer visitor in Himalayas from May to October.

Song is a far-carrying, hauntingly human-like whistle. Calls of the purple cochoa include low nasal chuckling “nyerr”, thin “sit” or “srii”, and soft high “pink-pink trrrrrew”.
