Everything that you need to know about this tree-climbing mustelid
Stone marten, a tree-climbing mustelid, adapted to rocky habitats, forests, hollow trees and human-altered environments at altitudes between 1500 and 4200 metre. With an approximate length of 40-45 cm, they have dark brown fur, short strong legs, wide set ears, distinctive white/light yellow patch on the throat and a peach/grey nose. Can be found in the Himalayas - Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim. Considered an invasive species in the USA. They are nocturnal and solitary and face threats due to habitat loss, poaching and attacks from free ranging dogs. Least concern on the IUCN Red List.

Stone martens are typically nocturnal. They are skilled, agile tree climbers but prefer a terrestrial, solitary life. They tend to mark their territory using scat and scent markings.

What does the diet of Stone martens consist of?

Stone martens are omnivores and eat rodents, hares, pikas as well as vegetables, apples, cherries, plums, pears, tomatoes, raspberries, grapes and mountain ash berries.
